Fundamental principle
Rich in abundant hydrophilic carboxyl and hydroxyl groups, Manuka Honey Alginate Dressing is capable of absorbing wound exudate upon direct contact with the wound bed. Alginate fibres within the dressing comprise sodium salt and calcium salt components. Sodium alginate is water soluble and readily forms a gel, while water insoluble calcium alginate triggers Ca² /Na⁺ ion exchange with sodium ions present in wound exudate. This reaction boosts gel generation and keeps the wound adequately moist. The insoluble calcium salts release calcium ions, which stimulate prothrombin activator production and therefore speed up blood clotting. Additionally, manuka honey enables pain free debridement of necrotic tissues and facilitates wound repair. It suppresses bacterial proliferation to prevent moisture driven wound suppuration, meanwhile lessening secondary trauma to the wound during dressing replacement.
